Governor Brown Signs Far-Reaching Anti-Gun Law

Unless you are an insurance adjuster or broker, person engaged solely in the business of securing information about persons or property from public records, a secured creditor engaged in repossession, security guard, movie maker, attorney, banker, collections agent, or other "specially" and specifically designated persons you will no longer be allowed to carry an UNLOADED and UNCONCEALED firearm.

"untrained, unscreened, self-appointed vigilante"

AB 144 was signed into law over the weekend and takes affect January 1, 2012.  The law is convoluted and misguided with countless exceptions having little rhyme or reason.

There is an exemption granted to "savings association" and another for persons engaged in or attempting to make a lawful arrest.  That's right, you can have a completely useless unloaded gun if you are attempting to lawfully arrest someone or if you are somehow a savings association.

This new infringement on our the 2nd Amendment is in response to concerns from several police chiefs and sheriffs around California.

According to the L.A. Times, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck says officers waste time responding to calls about people with guns who are otherwise being lawful.  It seems that officers and the public have a hard time distinguishing the difference between criminal and non-criminal activities.

Brian Malte

Under AB 144 what use to be harmless and lawful is at least a misdemeanor and probably a felony.

Brian Malte, director of state legislation for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, told the L.A. Times "California families will now be able to take their families to the park or out to eat without the worry of getting shot by some untrained, unscreened, self-appointed vigilante."

But wait.  This law only concerns possession of an UNLOADED gun.  How does Malte make the jump from a unloaded guns to loaded guns??  It was already a crime to exercise vigilante justice as well as negligently discharge a firearm in a public place.  Now, no UNLOADED guns will be discharged??  What is Malte and his fascist Brady brats smoking??

Let's recap.  Brown has just criminalized something that cannot by its own definition hurt anyone- carrying an UNCONCEALED and UNLOADED gun.

Ca. Assemblyman Anthony Portafino (D)

"The bottom line is the streets will be safer for law enforcement and families," said the bill's author, Assemblyman Anthony Portantino (D-La Canada Flintridge). "California is no longer the wild west, where citizens had to carry six-shooters on their hips for protection."

Someone needs to tell Portantino that those six-shooters he is referring to are UNLOADED and completely inert.

The argument for passing AB 144 is completely baseless and does NOTHING to make California safer.  Some people just don't get it.

Bill Hunt Talks About Concealed Weapon Permits (CCW)

As part of an ongoing report, March 1, 2010, FFFF’s Travis Kiger, Fullerton businessman Larry Lazar and myself sat down with Bill Hunt, 2010 candidate for Orange County Sheriff. The roundtable discussion was an opportunity to ask some important questions that we think are on the minds of voters. No topic was off-limits.

We had some questions about CCW’s for the man whose slogan has been “The Sheriff should be in the business of protecting people’s rights, not restricting them.”

We asked Bill Hunt how his stance was different from his opponent’s. Hunt told us that he is a constitutionalist and believes that the current system lends itself to corruption. Hunt believes that the statistics from 39 “Shall Issue” states, is proof that CCW’s lower crime rates. Further, he believes that an armed citizenry will help keep the peace at a time when the Sheriff’s Department is looking to lay off sworn deputies.

We also asked Hunt to lay out the process that an applicant can expect if he is elected Sheriff. Hunt said, “If we have someone come in and they are a range owner and maybe they have own of these reciprocal CCW’s that’s good in thirteen states, and they’re in good standing in those states, then I think we need to shorten up that process. We need to verify that the permit is legitimate and have had backgrounds on them, and then do an updated background to make sure there have been no problems in the interim. Then we check their training. If they’re proficient, we have our range master check them out. If they’re proficient, sign them off. If it’s a new person with no current CCW then we need to do the full background check, send them through the full NRA familiarization course, and get them through the process!”

Hunt also wants to waive or at least reduce fees for low-income applicants. The logic is simple: low-income areas have higher crime rates thus more victims. Lowering fees would put the odds back in the hands of citizens rather than the criminals.

A cookie-cutter approach is the wrong way to handle it. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to CCW’s, crime victims, and high propensity targets.

“When seconds count, cops are minutes away!” – Bill Hunt

Hutchens Consultant Under Investigation for Corruption

Riverside County DA sends investigators to Northern California political consultant's office

12:02 PM PST on Thursday, March 4, 2010

By JIM MILLER
Sacramento Bureau
Special Section: San Jacinto Corruption Probe

SACRAMENTO - Riverside County district attorney investigators showed up last week at the Northern California offices of a prominent Republican consulting firm and a bookkeeping business linked to a defendant in the campaign-finance prosecution of several Inland political and civic leaders.

Gilliard Blanning and Associates of Rocklin and the KAL Group of Willows have advised dozens of candidates and campaign groups in the Inland area and around the state over the years.

During the 2008 election cycle, the companies worked for a committee involved in the hard-fought Republican primary for Riverside County's 37th Senate District between then-Assemblyman John Benoit and former Assemblyman Russ Bogh.

District attorney investigators spent part of last Thursday at Gilliard Blanning's office.

The same day, members of the district attorney's political corruption unit served a search warrant at the KAL Group, according to government records.

A spokesman for Riverside County District Attorney Rod Pacheco would neither confirm nor deny last week's activities. David Gilliard, a GOP campaign veteran, has not returned several phone calls in recent days. KAL Group owner Kelly Lawler also has not returned requests for comment.

In November, Pacheco's office announced a 155-count indictment alleging that nine people, including four of the five San Jacinto City Council members, conspired to skirt campaign contribution limits and funnel money into the 2006 Assembly candidacy of San Jacinto Councilman Jim Ayres.

Neither Gilliard Blanning nor the KAL Group was part of the indictment. State records show that neither business was involved in the 2006 Assembly primary race at the heart of the November case.

Speculation in political circles has centered on ties between the two firms and Stephen R. Holgate, one of the defendants in the Riverside County case.

In spring 2008, Holgate, an Inland developer and former CHP officer, largely bankrolled a pro-Benoit campaign committee called Conservative Leaders of America, giving it $100,000.

Almost all of the advertising money went through Gilliard Blanning. The KAL Group, the committee's treasurer, was paid about $2,000.

The committee paid for a barrage of TV ads and mailers promoting Benoit or opposing Bogh.

Bogh is a close political ally of Pacheco.

Benoit's consultant in 2008, Jim Nygren, said Wednesday that he has not had any communication with Pacheco's office.

Rocklin police Lt. Lon Milka said officers assisted the Riverside County investigators at a Rocklin address that matches that of Gilliard Blanning and Associates.

A report from the Glenn County Sheriff's Department said two sheriff's officials accompanied the investigators to Lawler's home office in unincorporated Willows.

Staff writers Dug Begley, Duane W. Gang and Rich De Atley contributed to this report.

Gilliard is a partner in campaign consulting firm Gilliard Blanning Wysocki & Associates (GBWA) http://www.gbwasacramento.com/team/

L.A. Airport Police Advocate Authorizing All Law Enforcement Officers to Carry Firearms Aboard Domestic Flights

For Immediate Release

L.A. airport police advocate authorizing all law enforcement officers to carry firearms aboard domestic flights

LOS ANGELES - February 8, 2010 –
The nation's largest airport police association today advocated authorizing all law enforcement officers to carry firearms aboard domestic airline flights. Marshall McClain, president of the Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Association (LAAPOA), said the program proposed to the Obama Administration by the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) is warranted in light of the recent attempt to detonate an explosive device aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Christmas Day and recent intelligence that Al-Qaeda is likely to attempt a terrorist attack in the U.S. within the next six months.

"We believe that additional armed, trained law enforcement personnel aboard aircraft is a prudent measure to be taken at this time," said McClain. "We join FLEOA in urging President Obama to issue an Executive Order to authorize all law enforcement officers, active and retired, and certified by the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA), to carry firearms aboard domestic flights as an added line of defense against terrorists."

The LEOSA of 2004 authorizes all law enforcement officers, active and retired, to carry firearms anywhere in the country, at any time, as long as they meet the criteria set forth in the act and qualify with their firearm on an annual basis. But they are only allowed to carry them aboard commercial airlines when traveling on official business and authorized by their department. The FLEOA maintains that all law enforcement officers who are LEOSA certified, and possess an annual medical clearance, are valuable assets that should be used to augment domestic flight coverage provided by federal air marshals.

FLEOA asked the President to direct the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration to comply with an Executive Order authorizing LEOSA-certified law enforcement officers to fly armed. FLEOA believes that the Federal Air Marshal Service has the ability to coordinate this effort and this action is necessary at this time as an additional layer of security to safeguard the flying public.

About the Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Association:
The Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Association represents more than 425 sworn police officers and firefighters of the Los Angeles Airport Police Department assigned to protect and serve Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY). Its Mission is to maintain a leadership role in organizing, empowering and representing the interests of all current and retired members.

NOTE: This story was first reported on KFI AM640 by Steven Gregory who provided me with the link to this press release. After reading it, I can't help but wonder why any citizen couldn't carry a firearm on board a domestic flight if they have received proper firearm training. Why restrict it only to law enforcement? If an officer wants to know how it feels to be a typical California citizen, just leave your gun at home.

Bill Hunt for O.C. Sheriff Speaks Again

OC Weekly Reports on Bill Hunt for OC Sheriff 2010

From

By R. Scott Moxley
Wed., Jan. 27 2010 @ 8:32PM

Bill Hunt, a conservative Republican candidate hoping to lead the Orange County Sheriff's Department, tonight blasted The Orange County Register for allegedly botching his response to a recent call from OC Republican boss Scott Baugh that all GOP candidates should reject endorsements and contributions from public employee unions.

According to Hunt, veteran Register columnist Frank Mickadeit erroneously reported on January 19 that he, Hunt, "stood up" at a GOP central committee meeting and stated he'd "abide by the Baugh mandate," a claim Hunt says was "copied and recirculated as if this assertion was true."

In an e-mail tonight to supporters, Hunt said that Mickadeit's "assertions are completely incorrect and a misinterpretation of the statements I made and the positions I hold."

Mickadeit, who has reduced his work at the Register while he attends Chapman Law School classes, hailed Baugh's anti-union idea as original and courageous (but not necessarily right).

Hunt, who is likely to win support from the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs (AOCDS)--the county's largest and most powerful law enforcement lobby, says Baugh's proposal would have a "chilling" effect on free speech rights in elections.

Hunt also noted that he contacted Mickadeit on January 23 for a retraction but didn't get a response.

Mickadeit told me this evening that he's been covering a complicated criminal trial and indeed owes Hunt a returned call. He said he will make a sincere effort to review his notes "to see if I made any mistakes."

"If I was wrong, I will definitely apologize," said Mickadeit. "But I do remember that Scott Baugh asked everyone in the audience who believes in his idea to stand up. Bill Hunt stood up for 10 or 15 minutes and when he spoke he said that he's been saying the same thing for five years. He got a lot of applause for saying that."

In his e-mail, Hunt says his statements solely addressed reckless government spending and not suppressing public unions.

"Scott Baugh doesn't speak for me," Hunt told me in a phone interview tonight. "He's new to reform. What I was telling him that night was: welcome to the party. He's been the hypocrite. He's trying to make the deputies' union the enemy. That's crazy. If he's upset with what AOCDS has earned then he should blame all the Republicans he helped put on the board of supervisors that approved the [early deputy retirement] deals. Now, all of sudden, when an outsider like me could get their endorsement, he pulls this. It's incredible."

Mickadeit said he will address the controversy in an upcoming column.

Along with Anaheim Deputy Police Chief Craig Hunter, Hunt--a former high ranking OCSD deputy--is challenging Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, who was the appointed choice to finish sheriff-turned-convicted-felon Mike Carona's term in office.

"Friends For Fullerton's Future" Sheds Light On Craig Hunter for OC Sheriff

Cover-ups and Controversy

(Craig Hunter, Deputy Chief, Anaheim P.D.)

Travis Kiger from FFFF sheds light on some of Anaheim Deputy Chief Craig Hunter's background.  Hunter is running against the currently appointed sheriff, Sandra Hutchens (who revoked hundreds of concealed weapons permits despite OC Supervisors' request she stop), as well as Bill Hunt (former acting chief of police of San Clemente under contract as an OC Sheriff Lieutenant).

Kiger's post is sure to bring out the Anaheim-freindly locals as well as the "gun nuts".   He received an endorsement from OCCCWS PAC (a.k.a. Greg Block Firearms Training) in late 2009 sparking controversy.  Hunter has a colorful past filled with substantiated claims of misconduct, beatings, and cover-ups.

Leadership and Integrity

(Bill Hunt, former Chief of Police, San Clemente and O.C. Sheriff Lieutenant)

Bill Hunt will undoubtedly get my support and vote.

From Hunt's website:
Protecting Our Rights…

It is my belief that the Sheriff should be in the business of protecting people's rights, not restricting them. I will issue concealed weapons permits (CCW) to any applicant who is a law abiding resident of the county, meets state mandated requirements and is not prohibited by law from possessing a firearm. I will depoliticize the process and establish an annual audit to review each application to ensure the process is unbiased, non-political and equitable.

I consider personal protection sufficient to meet the standard of good cause.

Amen, brother!

Be a Good Scout - Be Prepared

The Washington Times reported (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2004/may/10/20040510-122711-8996r/) on Monday, May 10, 2004 that “Metropolitan Police officers took more than a minute longer to respond to emergency calls last year than they did in 2002, according to recent police department statistics. The statistics, contained in the department's fiscal 2005 budget performance report, show that the average response time for the highest-priority calls -- Priority 1 -- was 8 minutes, 25 seconds in fiscal 2003, up from 7 minutes, 19 seconds in fiscal 2002 and 7 minutes, 47 seconds in fiscal 2001.”

My Grandma - A Eulogy

LET'S TALK ABOUT 1914 FOR A MOMENT.

FOR STARTERS, GRANDMA WAS BORN TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1914 IN HER FAMILY'S ATWOOD RANCH HOUSE.

IT IS WORTH NOTING THOSE ALSO BORN IN 1914:

JACK LALANNE

JOE DIMAGGIO

DANNY THOMAS

AND WHO DIED IN 1914:

JOHN MUIR, THE FAMOUS NATURALIST FOR WHICH NUMEROUS ROADS, PARKS, HOTELS, AND NATURE RESERVES ARE NAMED.

IT IS ALSO WORTH NOTING THAT IN 1914 WOODROW WILSON SIGNS MOTHER'S DAY PROCLAMATION AND BABE RUTH MAKES HIS MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT WITH THE RED SOX. MOTHER'S DAY AND BASEBALL- TWO OF MY FAVORITES!! (PERHAPS HER NICKNAME "BABE" CAME FROM BABE RUTH???)

GRANDMA WAS BORN INTO A PERIOD OF TIME FILLED WITH TURMOIL. IN JUNE OF 1914 ARCHDUKE FRANZS FERDINAND WAS ASSASSINATED. WITHIN ONE MONTH WORLD WAR I RAGED ACROSS EUROPE. TWO DAYS AFTER HER BIRTH HOWEVER, GERMAN AND BRITISH TROOPS INTERRUPTED WWI TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS. (PERHAPS THEY PAUSE KNOWING THAT A GREAT WOMAN WAS BORNE) WORLD WAR I CONTINUED UNTIL THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES IN 1919.

ALTHOUGH SHE WAS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD, SHE SAW THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS CREATED AND THE 19TH AMENDMENT WAS APPROVED BY THE U.S. CONGRESS GUARANTEEING THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN TO VOTE.

SHE LIVED THROUGH MANY NOTABLE EVENTS. LIKE THE 1933 LONG BEACH EARTHQUAKE OR WHEN ATWOOD FLOODED ALONG WITH MOST OF ORANGE COUNTY IN 1938 AND THE FLOOD-WATERS CLAIMED MORE THAN 50 PEOPLE, 43 OF WHICH WERE FROM ATWOOD! ALL OF THIS DURING A TIME THAT WE READ ABOUT IN SCHOOL AND KNOWN AS "THE GREAT DEPRESSION". SOMEWHERE IN ALL OF THAT SHE FOUND THE LOVE OF HER LIFE, GRANDPA LEO, GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL, GOT MARRIED, AND HAD KIDS!

THEN THERE WAS WORLD WAR II. FROM PEARL HARBOR TO HIROSHIMA, GRANDMA WAS RAISING MY UNCLE BOB AND MOM ARLINE. WITH AIR-RAID SIRENS AND BLACKOUTS SHE WAS A WIFE AND MOTHER. WHAT A TIME TO RAISE CHILDREN! I BET GRANDMA'S PARENTS WERE ABEL TO TELL HER A THING OR TWO ABOUT RAISING KIDS IN WARTIME.

GRANDMA WAS THERE WHEN THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA HELD THEIR 3RD ANNUAL NATIONAL JAMBOREE IN 1953. SHE SAW AIRBASES OPEN IN '42 AND CLOSE IN '99. SHE WATCHED WALTER KNOTT START UP HIS BERRY FARM AND WALT DISNEY TURN ORANGE GROVES AND STRAWBERRY PATCHES INTO DISNEYLAND!

SHE SAW THE HORSE AND CARRIAGE FADE AWAY INTO HISTORY AND SPACE TRAVEL EXPLODE BEFORE HER WITH THE FIRST LUNAR LANDING. JUST IMAGINE HOW MUCH TECHNOLOGY HAS CHANGED OVER THE LAST 100 YEARS. FROM TUBE RECTIFIERS TO SUPERCONDUCTORS; FROM TRANS-ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH CABLES TO SATELLITE TV.

SHE SAW MORE IN HER 93 YEARS THAN MOST OF US WILL EVER READ ABOUT, LET ALONE LIVE THROUGH!

OF THOSE 93 YEARS IT IS MY HONOR TO HAVE BEEN HER GRANDSON FOR 35 OF THEM. SHE WAS MY MOTHER WHEN MOM HAD TO WORK. SHE WIPED MY NOSE AND PUT FOOD IN MY MOUTH. SHE LET ME PLAY WITH GRANDPA EVEN THOUGH SHE NEEDED HIM TO TAKE HER TO THE STORE. SHE WAS MY GRANDMA AND I WILL MISS HER IMMENSELY.

JUST LOOK AROUND THIS ROOM; SHE DID THIS. SHE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING SO MANY GOOD PEOPLE INTO THIS WORLD AND TOGETHER TODAY. THIS IS HER LEGACY.

A Dedication To My Loving Wife, Stacey. Thank you for all you do for me!

Brad Paisley - I Thought I Loved You Then

I remember trying not to stare the night that I first met you
You had me mesmerized
3 weeks later in the front porch light taking 45 min to kiss you goodnight
I hadn’t told you yet but I thought I loved you then

Chorus
Now you’re my whole life now you’re my whole world
I just can’t believe the way I feel about you girl
Like a river meets the sea
Stronger than it’s ever been
We’ve come so far since that day
And I thought I loved you then.

I remember taking you back to right where I first met you
You were so surprised
There were people around
But I didn’t care I got down on one knee right there
And once again I thought I loved you then

Chorus
Now you’re my whole life now you’re my whole world
I just can’t believe the way I feel about you girl
Like a river meets the sea
Stronger than it’s ever been
We’ve come so far since that day
And I thought I loved you then.

I can just see you with a baby on the way
I can just see you when your hair is turning gray
What I can’t see is how I’m ever gonna love you more
But I’ve said that before.

Now you’re my whole life now you’re my whole world
I just can’t believe the way I feel about you girl
Well look back some day at this moment that we’re in
And I'll look at you and say I thought I loved you then
And I thought I loved you then...
