Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson has reportedly requested a concealed weapon permit from OC Sheriff Sandra Hutchens.  R. Scott Moxley spoke with Nelson and posted the story at OC Weekly.

According to the Fullerton resident, he's already taken all the necessary gun training courses and, once Sheriff Sandra Hutchens formally issues him a permit, will carry a semi-automatic Colt Commander .45 caliber handgun.

Any future lunatic should be warned.

The big question on my mind is this:  Is the right to keep and bear arms in the name of self-defense only a right of someone occupying a residence?  What about the "houseless" (a term my brother likes to use and rightfully so)?  What about business owners and workers?  Do you have to have a structure in which you you live, pay rent, or own in order to defend your self with a firearm?  I think not.

Based on the Court's ruling, I think the right to self-defense is not limited to the domicile but rather anywhere a person is.  The only exceptions that I could foresee might include public schools and buildings such as City Hall, where there is a police presence and command of security to defend the defenseless. 

The real question...when will California recognize the U.S. Constitution?

"Bill Hunt's Remarkable Rise" (from OC Weekly)

Yesterday (4/1/2010), R. Scott Moxley of OC Weekly wrote about "Bill Hunt's Remarkable Rise". Moxley does a pretty fair job of covering Hunt’s rise since his first run in 2006 up to recent events but he fails to paint the whole picture. What is missing is how Hunt was able to garner the level of support he has now. To understand his "remarkable rise" one has to go back at least to Hunt's high school days when he knew he wanted to be a lawman. He sketched out a plan and he began pursuing his dream. Since he knew he had to be 21 to be a California peace officer, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and became a military police officer. I believe it was this experience which helped Hunt develop his leadership skills. Make no mistake; you don’t just wake up as a leader and simply lead. It takes training, practice, skill, and the desire to lead. Leaders are motivated from within, perhaps by some higher calling, hence they are passionate.

What Moxley saw at the Young Republican’s event was Hunt’s natural enthusiasm and skillful execution of his well developed platform on protecting OC constituent’s Constitutional rights. By simply stating that Hunt can give a raw-raw speech and “returned to fertile turf” when he continues to talk about protecting our Constitutional rights from overreaching federal agents ignores the fact that the audience, residents, and voters all have substantial and genuine concerns which, to date, only Hunt has embraced. The other candidates, Hunter and Hutchens, have held to the premise that a do-nothing sheriff is better than one who will protect their constituent’s rights by challenging federal laws that ignore the California Constitution. Moxley reports that, “One attendee, who had told me he was undecided before the forum, said he’ll vote for Hunt. ‘[Hutchens] is too wishy-washy,’ concluded the man, who described himself as a retired advertising executive. ‘Hunter has some good experience in Anaheim, but I got the feeling he also has a chip on his shoulder. Hunt impressed me the most. He doesn’t seem afraid to do the job right.’” This advertising exec discovered in one brief evening with the candidates what the media and a handful of local pundits seem to have missed.

Hunts critics enjoy using the “racist” tag on Hunt because of his alignment and endorsement from Arizona sheriff, Joe Arpaio and the fact that calling someone a racist is a powerfull charge that is sure to get headlines. Being fixated on shaming the audience, Hunter pulled the race card on Hunt. Moxley says, “Hunt’s alignment with Arpaio prompted Hunter to call the Arizona sheriff ‘an overzealous . . . racist.’ The crowd booed again, and Hunt pounced. ‘You call Joe Arpaio a racist?’ he said. ‘That’s what happens when a sheriff stands up and does his duty!’” There is the difference between a leader and a manager.

As Hunt’s campaign continues, I believe we will see some expansion on how Bill Hunt plans to safeguard ALL of our rights, not just the ones that are popular in some communities.

Fullerton Taggers Busted

FULLERTON – An officer patrolling downtown Fullerton on Tuesday spotted five taggers in an alley, and then pounced to arrest all five after enlisting backup, police said.

At 1:20 p.m., Cpl. John DeCaprio was patrolling the area of the FM Market liquor store in the 400 block of Harbor Boulevard when he saw through a fence five males tagging what Fullerton police Sgt. Andrew Goodrich said were gang monikers on the wall with felt-tipped pens.

Three were writing, while two acted as lookouts, Goodrich said.

He said DeCaprio quietly called for backup, and was able to team up with another police car to roll up and block exits from the alley, allowing the officers it intercept all five.

Four were juveniles and taken to Juvenile Hall, Goodrich said. The fifth was an adult.

He said he expects the five arrested to face vandalism and gang charges.

Below are some pictures I took back in February of the 92831 post Office property in downtown Fullerton. I hate taggers and the mess they make. Fullerton Police Corporal John DeCaprio deserves a medal for his bust. It may not have been a violent crime in progress or a person down call, however, it was exactly what all of us hope our officers are doing everyday - fighting crime. The best part is that the officer observed the crime, called in back up, and caught 5 decrepit gangbanging thugs! I hope they are all charged as adults! Great job Cpl. DeCaprio and the FPD for exemplify quality service to our city and meeting our expectations!!

Bill Hunt Talks About Concealed Weapon Permits (CCW)

As part of an ongoing report, March 1, 2010, FFFF’s Travis Kiger, Fullerton businessman Larry Lazar and myself sat down with Bill Hunt, 2010 candidate for Orange County Sheriff. The roundtable discussion was an opportunity to ask some important questions that we think are on the minds of voters. No topic was off-limits.

We had some questions about CCW’s for the man whose slogan has been “The Sheriff should be in the business of protecting people’s rights, not restricting them.”

We asked Bill Hunt how his stance was different from his opponent’s. Hunt told us that he is a constitutionalist and believes that the current system lends itself to corruption. Hunt believes that the statistics from 39 “Shall Issue” states, is proof that CCW’s lower crime rates. Further, he believes that an armed citizenry will help keep the peace at a time when the Sheriff’s Department is looking to lay off sworn deputies.

We also asked Hunt to lay out the process that an applicant can expect if he is elected Sheriff. Hunt said, “If we have someone come in and they are a range owner and maybe they have own of these reciprocal CCW’s that’s good in thirteen states, and they’re in good standing in those states, then I think we need to shorten up that process. We need to verify that the permit is legitimate and have had backgrounds on them, and then do an updated background to make sure there have been no problems in the interim. Then we check their training. If they’re proficient, we have our range master check them out. If they’re proficient, sign them off. If it’s a new person with no current CCW then we need to do the full background check, send them through the full NRA familiarization course, and get them through the process!”

Hunt also wants to waive or at least reduce fees for low-income applicants. The logic is simple: low-income areas have higher crime rates thus more victims. Lowering fees would put the odds back in the hands of citizens rather than the criminals.

A cookie-cutter approach is the wrong way to handle it. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to CCW’s, crime victims, and high propensity targets.

SACRAMENTO - Riverside County district attorney investigators showed up last week at the Northern California offices of a prominent Republican consulting firm and a bookkeeping business linked to a defendant in the campaign-finance prosecution of several Inland political and civic leaders.

Gilliard Blanning and Associates of Rocklin and the KAL Group of Willows have advised dozens of candidates and campaign groups in the Inland area and around the state over the years.

During the 2008 election cycle, the companies worked for a committee involved in the hard-fought Republican primary for Riverside County's 37th Senate District between then-Assemblyman John Benoit and former Assemblyman Russ Bogh.

District attorney investigators spent part of last Thursday at Gilliard Blanning's office.

The same day, members of the district attorney's political corruption unit served a search warrant at the KAL Group, according to government records.

A spokesman for Riverside County District Attorney Rod Pacheco would neither confirm nor deny last week's activities. David Gilliard, a GOP campaign veteran, has not returned several phone calls in recent days. KAL Group owner Kelly Lawler also has not returned requests for comment.

In November, Pacheco's office announced a 155-count indictment alleging that nine people, including four of the five San Jacinto City Council members, conspired to skirt campaign contribution limits and funnel money into the 2006 Assembly candidacy of San Jacinto Councilman Jim Ayres.

Neither Gilliard Blanning nor the KAL Group was part of the indictment. State records show that neither business was involved in the 2006 Assembly primary race at the heart of the November case.

Speculation in political circles has centered on ties between the two firms and Stephen R. Holgate, one of the defendants in the Riverside County case.

In spring 2008, Holgate, an Inland developer and former CHP officer, largely bankrolled a pro-Benoit campaign committee called Conservative Leaders of America, giving it $100,000.

Almost all of the advertising money went through Gilliard Blanning. The KAL Group, the committee's treasurer, was paid about $2,000.

The committee paid for a barrage of TV ads and mailers promoting Benoit or opposing Bogh.

Bogh is a close political ally of Pacheco.

Benoit's consultant in 2008, Jim Nygren, said Wednesday that he has not had any communication with Pacheco's office.

Rocklin police Lt. Lon Milka said officers assisted the Riverside County investigators at a Rocklin address that matches that of Gilliard Blanning and Associates.

A report from the Glenn County Sheriff's Department said two sheriff's officials accompanied the investigators to Lawler's home office in unincorporated Willows.

L.A. airport police advocate authorizing all law enforcement officers to carry firearms aboard domestic flights

LOS ANGELES - February 8, 2010 –
The nation's largest airport police association today advocated authorizing all law enforcement officers to carry firearms aboard domestic airline flights. Marshall McClain, president of the Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Association (LAAPOA), said the program proposed to the Obama Administration by the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) is warranted in light of the recent attempt to detonate an explosive device aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Christmas Day and recent intelligence that Al-Qaeda is likely to attempt a terrorist attack in the U.S. within the next six months.

"We believe that additional armed, trained law enforcement personnel aboard aircraft is a prudent measure to be taken at this time," said McClain. "We join FLEOA in urging President Obama to issue an Executive Order to authorize all law enforcement officers, active and retired, and certified by the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA), to carry firearms aboard domestic flights as an added line of defense against terrorists."

The LEOSA of 2004 authorizes all law enforcement officers, active and retired, to carry firearms anywhere in the country, at any time, as long as they meet the criteria set forth in the act and qualify with their firearm on an annual basis. But they are only allowed to carry them aboard commercial airlines when traveling on official business and authorized by their department. The FLEOA maintains that all law enforcement officers who are LEOSA certified, and possess an annual medical clearance, are valuable assets that should be used to augment domestic flight coverage provided by federal air marshals.

FLEOA asked the President to direct the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration to comply with an Executive Order authorizing LEOSA-certified law enforcement officers to fly armed. FLEOA believes that the Federal Air Marshal Service has the ability to coordinate this effort and this action is necessary at this time as an additional layer of security to safeguard the flying public.

After reading it, I can't help but wonder why any citizen couldn't carry a firearm on board a domestic flight if they have received proper firearm training. Why restrict it only to law enforcement? If an officer wants to know how it feels to be a typical California citizen, just leave your gun at home.
