OC Register Endorses Sebourn, Paden for Fullerton Council

Fullerton is recovering from a largely negative bout in the public limelight. A high-profile prosecution for police brutality cast shame on city governance, prompting a recall of three council members and engaging the city in questions of oversight for law enforcement.

The resulting scrutiny bore fruit: Fullerton became a pioneer in using police body cameras and is pondering a civilian review board. Yet, residents are now facing another important election, one that will no doubt greatly influence how the city engages a whole range of issues: Homelessness, infrastructure, pensions, development and more.

To continue the city on its positive path, the Register recommends the mayor pro tem, Greg Sebourn, and challenger Sean Paden for City Council.

I have officially filed my intention to run for Fullerton City Council.   It was not an easy decision to make but with the support and encouragement of my family and friends, I think it is the right decision for Fullerton.

I have been speaking out and writing about the tax and spend policies of our failed leadership as well as the lack of transparency at City Hall for several years. Every step of the way I have been there fighting to keep taxes low.

Fullerton deserves quality leadership, accountability, and fiscal transparency. Are these too much to ask? No!

8 Days

With 8 days left I am walking daily and talking with Fullerton voters and concerned taxpayers.  Voters are fired up and tired of the business-as-usual attitude of City Hall.  Few are content with the direction the City of Fullerton is headed and most are upset that city "fees" (taxes) continue to rise while services are scaled back.  Taxpayers see this as civic mismanagement and they want accountability and transparency.

I have been contacted by several residents who are concerned about overnight parking in their neighborhoods.  Some really want overnight parking and some really don't want to see the neighborhood teens and their cars on the street at night.  Others don't want their neighbor's RV left out curbside. 

I have had a few calls from public employees interested hearing my ideas for pension reform.  Some are scared, some are embarrassed, but most are just concerned about their future.  And who can blame them considering the magnitude of the fiscal crisis.  Many retired Fullerton firefighters have made it clear that the current pension formula just isn't right.  All of them said it was the nature of the work which attracted them to the fire service, not the pay or pension.  They each signed up because they wanted to serve their community and they enjoyed the hours.  Until recent years, they pay was not particularly high nor was the pension.  They point back to 9-11 as the definitive moment when public safety employees garnered major attention and support from taxpayers.  Everyone could see the dangerous work they do and they could justify the higher pay and generous pension formula.  But thankfully not every day is 9-11.  Each expressed that the job just isn't as dangerous as it used to be thanks to emerging technology, new building safety standards, and training.

The campaign trail has been an amazing endeavor which, sadly, few will venture.  It is an expensive process if you hope to win which, unless you are wealthy, requires you to hold your hand out and ask for donations.  As I have repeatedly said, political campaigns are the most unworthy cause for anyone to donate to.  Often, your money would be better spent on supplies for the soup kitchen or investing in a food bank.  But in order for the common man or woman to run and win an election, it takes money and boots on the ground.  Despite being out spent 10:1 by other candidates who have received support from special interest groups, I have been able to run a strong campaign and have received tremendous support from residents, small business owners, family, and friends.

Steven Greenhut's Election Wish and Orange County Taxpayer's Opportunity

In the June 4, 2010 Orange County Register’s Op-Ed Steven Greenhut says that June 8th will likely not bring the much needed reform that California needs.

Greenhut writes, “Love 'em or hate 'em, these initiatives are mostly self-interested deals. They don't offer major reform – and none of them get close to touching the fundamental issues that threaten California today. And none of the candidates offers real hope for taking on the vested interests and changing our state.”

Indeed, the statewide offices, regardless of who occupies them, will have little positive affect on most of us in our daily lives. But all is not lost. Voters need only to look at their local elections to see the winds of reform blowing in. Local elections offer taxpaying voters an opportunity to hold our incumbents accountable for their misdeeds and business-as-usual politics, to say nothing of their fiscal shell games.

Whether you take issue with wasteful spending, abuses of power, or constitutional rights, you can begin reforming your local offices and agencies by making smart choices with your vote. As Tip O’Neil said, “All politics is local.”

June 8th is the beginning of the end of Orange County’s longstanding RINO establishment. November 2nd, 2010 stands to be the nail in the political coffin for those who have reaped constituents with their bad policies. All you have to do is vote.

Voting is the quickest path to reform. Elect only those candidates who are ready, willing, and able to do what’s right in the face of controversy and opposition.

Are People Stupid?

The Orange County Register just released "Petitioners conned voters into switching to the GOP". So, how did these "voters" get "conned"? Under one of the very humorous photos of ticked-off libs is this: "Melissa Healy, 24, says she has voted for Barack Obama and John Kerry, but ended up on the voter rolls as a Republican because a signature gatherer at UC Irvine told her to mark herself as a Republican when she was signing some papers on campus." She really must be a dope to actually do as she is told without questioning the intentions of the person telling her to do something. Melissa must be the sort of person Mother warned you about, "If everyone jumped off a bridge, would you?" Melissa might, if you told her to. But in the interest of giving Melissa some benefit of doubt I have to ask what the circumstances were behind the "petitioner" who told her to mark herself as a republican. Was she somehow intimidated? Was he a good-looking guy who had her in some sort of trance? What happened? Surely the "petitioner" didn't force her to do it or there would be a police report on her incident.

So, why did all of these people switch to the GOP? Were they stupid or were they conned? We find the answer to our questions in the 5th paragraph:

"All of the voters identified by the Register are listed as under 28 years old; many said they knew little about politics or voting. A few, when told they were listed on the county voter rolls as a Republican, asked, 'What is a Republican?'"

As I suspected: Stupid! Read every word and understand it BEFORE you sign ANYTHING! Didn't your parents or teachers ever tell you that? Sometimes, you get what you deserve.

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas Looses Battle

I first learned of the story from whoiscraighunter.org.  The L.A. Times is reporting that the DA wrongfully fired an investigator who was investigating one of Rackauckas's pals.

O.C. detective wins back job after being fired for investigating political donor

 A veteran Orange County district attorney’s investigator who was fired after he refused to drop his probe into one of the district attorney’s close friends and political contributors has, for a second time, won back his job and will probably get more than $1 million in back pay.

Lyle Wilson was fired in 2002 for his handling of an investigation into the business dealings of Patrick Di Carlo, a wealthy Newport Beach businessman and supporter of Orange County Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas.


The firing brought criticism of Rackauckas early in his career as district attorney and led to an Orange County Grand Jury report that accused the district attorney of interfering in criminal investigations involving political contributors.


In an opinion filed Wednesday, appellate court Justice Eileen C. Moore wrote that the case “arises against a backdrop of political intrigue and purported cover-ups.”

The controversy started in 2000 after Wilson was assigned to investigate allegations that Di Carlo was the victim of extortion. Wilson and his supervisor subsequently shifted the investigation to Di Carlo for purported violations of federal and state securities laws.


Rackauckas later suspended Wilson and his supervisor and accused them of stealing evidence. He also accused Wilson of investigating Di Carlo, even after he was ordered off the case, and of talking about the case with the media.


Following about two years’ paid suspension, Wilson was fired for insubordination, untruthfulness and violating the district attorney’s media policy.


In 2008, a Los Angeles Superior Court ruled that the district attorney erred when Wilson was fired for insubordination and ordered the firing vacated.


But rather than reinstate Wilson, county officials told Wilson the reason for his firing had been changed.


The move was an attempt to “game the system by backdating an amended discharge order and hoping it would fly,” Moore wrote in the opinion.


“It was a no-brainer,” said Corey Glave, Wilson’s attorney. “The county tried to play a game to do an end run around the court’s judgment without appealing it and it backfired.”

The district attorney’s office received the opinion on Thursday and was “exploring all legal options to decide what our next step is,” spokeswoman Susan Kang Schroeder said.

Big Changes at the California Republican Assembly - What Does It Mean?

But will the change in leadership at the state level mean changes at the local level? I have not had a very good experience with the CRA, but I still think that there is hope. Most of my bad experience with the CRA is similar to that of other non-profit organizations that have a structure and very little support for membership. Based on comments and email exchanges from blogger Sgt. York (Aaron Park), I think CRA is going to have to endure some significant growing and restructuring pains to overcome the years of hypocritical and completely dead-wrong leadership that I have seen. I hope they get it together quickly and return to their core values to help with the 2012 election.

Hutchens: You Should Vote for One of My Opponents

Regarding the AOCDS endorsement of Hunt, Appointed Sheriff Hutchens said, “They haven’t picked a winner in 10 years, so let’s see how it goes.” I hate to break this to the Sheriff, but neither did the Board of Supervisors when they picked her to take over the OC Sheriff's Department! Since the beginning of her reign she has investigated all of the wrong people and denied OC residents their constitutional rights. Poor decision making on her part will lead OC closer to a second bankruptcy with the law suits that are sure to flood her office from residents harmed by her early release policy for inmates and her belief that her powers supersede the U.S. Constitution.

Shawn Nelson's List of Endorsements Continues to Grow

Today I received news that Shawn Nelson has been endorsed by OC Supervisor Pat Bates.

FULLERTON, CA -- Orange County Supervisor Pat Bates today endorsed Shawn Nelson in his campaign to be elected Supervisor for the Fourth District. Pat Bates is known as one of Orange County's most respected public servants.

"Shawn Nelson will be a strong ally in the work to make government more efficient, transparent, and responsive to the people of Orange County," said Supervisor Bates. "His experience as a strong advocate for taxpayers will serve the constituents of the Fourth District well."


Pat Bates was the founding Mayor of Laguna Niguel and served as a Council Member in that city from 1989 to 1998. Pat was elected to the State Assembly in 1998. After finishing three terms in the legislature, Pat was elected to represent the Fifth District on the Orange County Board of Supervisors. During the past year, Supervisor Bates served as Board Chair and led the County through a time of great economic challenge.


"Shawn shares my values of fiscal responsibility, limited government and individual liberty. I am proud to endorse his candidacy and look forward to working with him on such issues as balancing the County budget, reforming the pension system, and making county government more accountable to the people," said Pat.


"Finally, I am also troubled by the false charges and character assassination already going on against Shawn. I believe voters will reject these tactics, just as they have in the past," Bates concluded.


Shawn Nelson is a strong fiscal conservative who was elected to the Fullerton City Council in November 2002. He served as Mayor in 2004-05 and 2006-07. Nelson is a California native who was raised in Fullerton and he lives in the district with his wife and children. Nelson was named the "Local Elected Official for 2009" by the Orange County Republican Party.
