A Message from Sean Paden

Dear Fullerton Voters:

I want you to know that the false attacks on Councilman Greg Sebourn by the allies of Larry Bennett and Doug Chaffee in a recent mailer are shamefully misleading.

The vote that the Fullerton police union claims Greg Sebourn made “against transparency” is completely false.

Here are the facts:  On June 17, 2014 Greg voted FOR transparency and it was Doug Chaffee, Larry Bennett’s ally on the City Council, who voted against it.

At issue is an ordinance called COIN. Two versions were proposed and Greg voted for one of them. The version Greg voted against exempted citizens’ oversight of labor negotiations of Fullerton’s police union.

Let that sink in a minute folks. The police unions just spent at least $15,000 on a direct mailer criticizing Greg for wanting their labor negotiations to occur out in the open – and they want you to believe that was a vote against transparency. Do not believe any of it.

Another deceptive attack was circulated in a scurrilous robo-call last week.  I have known Greg Sebourn for four years now and have attended almost all of the council meetings on which he has been a member. He is a man of good character and integrity and would never stoop to spreading the kind of falsehoods that are being spread about him.

Fullerton voters, please do not be fooled by these deceitful mailers and phone messages.

On Tuesday, November 4, please cast your vote FOR transparency in city government.

Sincerely,
Sean Paden
Candidate for Fullerton City Council

Proudly Vote for Greg Sebourn and Sean Paden
on Tuesday, November 4.

Nelson, Hunt, and the AOCDS

Why am I happy that Bill Hunt received the AOCDS (Association of Orange County Sheriff Deputies) endorsement and that Shawn Nelson didn’t bother to ask?

Bill Hunt, 2010 candidate for OC Sheriff, said he did not feel the OCGOP chairman Scott Baugh’s mandate was reasonable. Then he sought the endorsement and received it.  That is consistency.

Shawn Nelson, 2010 candidate to fill 4th District OC Supervisor seat vacated by Chris Norby, declined to so much as interview for the endorsement citing conflict with the OCGOP proclamation.  That is also consistency.

I support both candidates for the same reasons. They both feel strong in their convictions and are not easily moved to change their stance on positions.  In other words, they are consistent.

Specifically regarding the AOCDS endorsements, Hunt is running to be sheriff and this I the sheriff’s union. Logically he should seek their support. Nelson, running for the OC Board of Supervisors does not need their support in the same manner as Hunt but it would be good to have. However, Nelson is also running for the OC GOP Central Committee and as such should play by party rules. Hunt, though active in politics, is not a member of the OCGOP Central Committee nor does it appear he wants to be. Hunt is a law man and Nelson is a politician. Don’t fight it, just realize that they are fight two different battles.

Further, Baugh’s hypocritical proclamation aside, all candidates should seek all possible endorsements without pandering to the endorser's cause. As much as the public employee pensions have hurt us, we must remember that the Board of Supervisors approved the pensions and that he labor unions are supposed to fight for every penny and every bit of compensation that they can get; that is their job. The Board should have done a better job negotiating the pensions and salaries down. We must also bear in mind that the Board’s decision was based in part by data provided by actuaries and that this pension tsunami is everyone’s fault.

Shawn Nelson Holds True To His Word - No Public Employee Union Support

Shawn Nelson Declines to Seek
Public Employee Union Support

FULLERTON, CA - - Councilman Shawn Nelson, a candidate for Supervisor in the 4th district, announced this morning that he will not seek the endorsement of the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs or of any other public employee union. The AOCDS is interviewing candidates today and invited Nelson and the other candidates in the 4th district to be interviewed.

"I hope to receive the support of the Orange County Republican Party and as such I do not believe their stance this year on public employee union support allows me to ask for both their support and that of the unions," said Nelson.

"While some candidates might try to game the system by asking for both endorsements and rely on some technical interpretation to justify their actions, that is not my style," said Nelson. "I will not mislead the party or the Sheriffs Union."

"Public safety has been and will remain my number one priority for as long as I am given the privilege of serving the taxpayers," said Nelson. "As a Supervisor, I will work to make sure public safety receives the funding they need to protect our neighborhoods. At the same time, I will strive to find a resolution to the public employee pension crisis that threatens to bankrupt local governments."

Shawn Nelson is a conservative City Councilman and the leading candidate in the 4th district, where he enjoys the strong support of former Supervisor and current Assemblyman Chris Norby as well as Representative Ed Royce, Senator Mimi Walters, Supervisors John Moorlach and Pat Bates, and the Lincoln Club of Orange County.

Perhaps my favorite quote from above is this: "...I do not believe their stance this year on public employee union support..." What could possibly make Nelson think that the OCGOP might change their stance next year? Maybe the fact that the OCGOP is losing what little credibility it may have had after, among other things, they failed to boycott or even denounce the California Republican Party's annual convention which was sponsored by at least two major public employee unions.

For what it's worth, which isn't much, I'm glad Shawn Nelson held true to his word.

No Endorsement 91 11.04%

Retired Lt. Bill Hunt receives the AOCDS-PAC endorsement for the 2010 election for Orange County Sheriff-Coroner.

Thomas Dominguez
AOCDS-PAC Chairperson

This is a huge win for Hunt and a significant blow to Acting Sheriff Sandra Hutchens. It doesn't mean much for Anaheim PD's Deputy Chief Craig Hunter who is supported and backed by cronies from feloniously corrupt sheriff Mike Carona and company. Frankly, I think many would have been surprised if Hunt didn't get the endorsement from the rank and file. The deputies know that Hunt is a solid, fair, and respected leader.

Labor Union Sponsors CRP Convention, Will OCGOP Denounce or Boycott?

With the California Republican Party's 2010 Spring Convention in Santa Clara coming up being sponsored in part by The Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriff’s, will OCGOP denounce and boycott the event considering the OCGOP chairman’s anti-union stance?

From ALADS website:
“In 1983, ALADS affiliated with the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, the AFL-CIO, and the Los Angeles County and California State Federations of Labor, moving us into the mainstream of organized working people working together. As a result, ALADS enjoys the strength of these bodies in its collective bargaining relationship with the County of Los Angeles and in its legislative efforts in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. ALADS leadership in dealing with the County on matters of salary, benefits and any other issues affecting working conditions is truly respected by all unions representing county employees.”

Consider the message we are sending if we attend? Are we going to follow through or quietly ignore the hypocrisy? Imagine the message we could send if we walk the way we talk.

"THANKS TO OUR 2010 SPRING CONVENTION SPONSORS!
California Statewide Law Enforcement Association
The Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs"

My instincts are telling me OCGOP Chairman Scott Baugh will do nothing even though the whole idea of the OCGOP not backing any canidate who receives support from any union was his idea!

My Grandma - A Eulogy

LET'S TALK ABOUT 1914 FOR A MOMENT.

FOR STARTERS, GRANDMA WAS BORN TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1914 IN HER FAMILY'S ATWOOD RANCH HOUSE.

IT IS WORTH NOTING THOSE ALSO BORN IN 1914:

JACK LALANNE

JOE DIMAGGIO

DANNY THOMAS

AND WHO DIED IN 1914:

JOHN MUIR, THE FAMOUS NATURALIST FOR WHICH NUMEROUS ROADS, PARKS, HOTELS, AND NATURE RESERVES ARE NAMED.

IT IS ALSO WORTH NOTING THAT IN 1914 WOODROW WILSON SIGNS MOTHER'S DAY PROCLAMATION AND BABE RUTH MAKES HIS MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT WITH THE RED SOX. MOTHER'S DAY AND BASEBALL- TWO OF MY FAVORITES!! (PERHAPS HER NICKNAME "BABE" CAME FROM BABE RUTH???)

GRANDMA WAS BORN INTO A PERIOD OF TIME FILLED WITH TURMOIL. IN JUNE OF 1914 ARCHDUKE FRANZS FERDINAND WAS ASSASSINATED. WITHIN ONE MONTH WORLD WAR I RAGED ACROSS EUROPE. TWO DAYS AFTER HER BIRTH HOWEVER, GERMAN AND BRITISH TROOPS INTERRUPTED WWI TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS. (PERHAPS THEY PAUSE KNOWING THAT A GREAT WOMAN WAS BORNE) WORLD WAR I CONTINUED UNTIL THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES IN 1919.

ALTHOUGH SHE WAS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD, SHE SAW THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS CREATED AND THE 19TH AMENDMENT WAS APPROVED BY THE U.S. CONGRESS GUARANTEEING THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN TO VOTE.

SHE LIVED THROUGH MANY NOTABLE EVENTS. LIKE THE 1933 LONG BEACH EARTHQUAKE OR WHEN ATWOOD FLOODED ALONG WITH MOST OF ORANGE COUNTY IN 1938 AND THE FLOOD-WATERS CLAIMED MORE THAN 50 PEOPLE, 43 OF WHICH WERE FROM ATWOOD! ALL OF THIS DURING A TIME THAT WE READ ABOUT IN SCHOOL AND KNOWN AS "THE GREAT DEPRESSION". SOMEWHERE IN ALL OF THAT SHE FOUND THE LOVE OF HER LIFE, GRANDPA LEO, GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL, GOT MARRIED, AND HAD KIDS!

THEN THERE WAS WORLD WAR II. FROM PEARL HARBOR TO HIROSHIMA, GRANDMA WAS RAISING MY UNCLE BOB AND MOM ARLINE. WITH AIR-RAID SIRENS AND BLACKOUTS SHE WAS A WIFE AND MOTHER. WHAT A TIME TO RAISE CHILDREN! I BET GRANDMA'S PARENTS WERE ABEL TO TELL HER A THING OR TWO ABOUT RAISING KIDS IN WARTIME.

GRANDMA WAS THERE WHEN THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA HELD THEIR 3RD ANNUAL NATIONAL JAMBOREE IN 1953. SHE SAW AIRBASES OPEN IN '42 AND CLOSE IN '99. SHE WATCHED WALTER KNOTT START UP HIS BERRY FARM AND WALT DISNEY TURN ORANGE GROVES AND STRAWBERRY PATCHES INTO DISNEYLAND!

SHE SAW THE HORSE AND CARRIAGE FADE AWAY INTO HISTORY AND SPACE TRAVEL EXPLODE BEFORE HER WITH THE FIRST LUNAR LANDING. JUST IMAGINE HOW MUCH TECHNOLOGY HAS CHANGED OVER THE LAST 100 YEARS. FROM TUBE RECTIFIERS TO SUPERCONDUCTORS; FROM TRANS-ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH CABLES TO SATELLITE TV.

SHE SAW MORE IN HER 93 YEARS THAN MOST OF US WILL EVER READ ABOUT, LET ALONE LIVE THROUGH!

OF THOSE 93 YEARS IT IS MY HONOR TO HAVE BEEN HER GRANDSON FOR 35 OF THEM. SHE WAS MY MOTHER WHEN MOM HAD TO WORK. SHE WIPED MY NOSE AND PUT FOOD IN MY MOUTH. SHE LET ME PLAY WITH GRANDPA EVEN THOUGH SHE NEEDED HIM TO TAKE HER TO THE STORE. SHE WAS MY GRANDMA AND I WILL MISS HER IMMENSELY.

JUST LOOK AROUND THIS ROOM; SHE DID THIS. SHE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING SO MANY GOOD PEOPLE INTO THIS WORLD AND TOGETHER TODAY. THIS IS HER LEGACY.

A Dedication To My Loving Wife, Stacey. Thank you for all you do for me!

Brad Paisley - I Thought I Loved You Then

I remember trying not to stare the night that I first met you
You had me mesmerized
3 weeks later in the front porch light taking 45 min to kiss you goodnight
I hadn’t told you yet but I thought I loved you then

Chorus
Now you’re my whole life now you’re my whole world
I just can’t believe the way I feel about you girl
Like a river meets the sea
Stronger than it’s ever been
We’ve come so far since that day
And I thought I loved you then.

I remember taking you back to right where I first met you
You were so surprised
There were people around
But I didn’t care I got down on one knee right there
And once again I thought I loved you then

Chorus
Now you’re my whole life now you’re my whole world
I just can’t believe the way I feel about you girl
Like a river meets the sea
Stronger than it’s ever been
We’ve come so far since that day
And I thought I loved you then.

I can just see you with a baby on the way
I can just see you when your hair is turning gray
What I can’t see is how I’m ever gonna love you more
But I’ve said that before.

Now you’re my whole life now you’re my whole world
I just can’t believe the way I feel about you girl
Well look back some day at this moment that we’re in
And I'll look at you and say I thought I loved you then
And I thought I loved you then...
