CRA: 2010 CRA Scorecard Rates State Legislators

Only 5 Legislators Receive 100% Ratings; 55 Get Zeros

The annual Legislative Scorecard published by the California Republican Assembly is out and only five of 120 legislators serving in Sacramento received perfect 100% ratings – a dramatic decrease from 2009 when thirteen received perfect scores.

“It’s disappointing that only five legislators would stand firm on conservative positions,” said CRA President Celeste Greig. “But we congratulate the Assembly Members and Senators who received perfect scores. They continue to demonstrate their commitment to Republican principles and should be thanked.”

Specifically, President Greig noted that Assemblyman Chuck DeVore was the only member of the Assembly with a perfect score, while Senators Sam Aanestad, Dave Cogdill, Jeff Denham and Mimi Walters all received perfect scores in the Senate. CRA’s scorecard is derived from votes cast on diverse bills ranging from increased fees on lobster fishermen to punishing employers by criminalizing wage disputes.

CRA Parliamentarian Tom Hudson, who compiled the scorecard, noted that there were elements that made this year’s scorecard difficult.

“The confirmation of Abel Maldonado as Lieutenant Governor was a very complicated vote for Republicans,” Hudson noted. “CRA was right to oppose the confirmation of tax-raising Senator Maldonado, who had a terrible record in the Legislature. However, many Republican legislators were motivated to get him out of the State Senate so that he could be replaced with a better Senator.” As a result, the vote for Maldonado does not carry as much negative weight as other bad votes in this year’s scorecard, he added.

The scorecard also focuses on other bills which may not seem important on the surface, but clearly demonstrate the divisions within the Democrat and Republican caucuses.

The total number of zeros on this year’s scorecard decreased for the second year in a row from 56 to 55.

“Democrats seem to be feeling the pressure from their constituents,” added Greig. “While they are still very partisan, they’re votes are changing very slightly.”

The highest scoring Democrat on the CRA scorecard was Senator Lou Correa who received a 35%. On the Assembly side, Assemblywoman Alyson Huber was the highest scoring Democrat with a paltry 24%.

“As usual, the highest scoring Democrats rank far lower than the lowest ranking Republicans,” said Greig.

Of the 120 legislators, the lowest scoring Republican was Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, who received a score of 63%, with Senator Tom Harman the lowest scorer in the Senate at 81%. Most notable is that seven Republican Assembly Members had lower scores than Harman.  (Senators Emmerson and Blakeslee were not scored this year because of the complicated circumstances surrounding their special elections to the Senate. However, both would have scored well below Senator Harman’s 81%.)

The Assembly overall voted far more liberal than the Senate. The Average score for the Assembly was 1.96% for Democrats and 80.68% for Republicans, while in the Senate it was 5.18% for Democrats and 92.02% for Republicans.

California Republican Assembly Endorses

Greg Sebourn for Fullerton City Council

　

Fullerton - Fullerton Unit of the California Republican Assembly (CRA) endorsed Greg Sebourn for Fullerton City Council at a Saturday morning joint-unit meeting in Yorba Linda.

The CRA is a statewide organization with various community units, like Fullerton, that support candidates for local office who are committed to lower taxes and limited government.

                                                                                                        

President Ronald Reagan called the California Republican Assembly, “the conscience of the Republican Party.”

Chartered in 1934, the CRA is the state’s oldest and largest Republican volunteer organization. CRA has been working to elect Republican candidates who stand unwaveringly for Republican principles.

“Thank you to all of the Fullerton members who came out to support me,” says Mr. Sebourn, “It is exciting to see that my message to take back Fullerton City Hall with critical issues on pension reform, public infrastructure and make our local government accountable resonates with the Fullerton CRA.”

Redevelopment Agencies and the Principles of the Ca. Republican Assembly

I was recently asked by a fellow member of the CRA why I felt that Redevelopment Agencies were bad for the public.  After my long dissertation (found throughout this blog and elsewhere), I boiled it down to the CRA's own principles.

7. That the market economy, based upon capitalism and free enterprise, allocating resources by the free play of supply and demand, is the greatest system for creating personal freedom, a strong constitutional government, and is the most productive supplier of human need.

8. That when government interferes with the free enterprise system or attempts to control the economy by taking from one individual to bestow upon another, it diminishes the incentive of the first, the integrity of the second, and the moral autonomy of both.

Redevelopment TAKES (purchases at "fair market value") property from one person and GIVES it (usually for FREE) to another under the auspices of "the public good".  On it's face it should be apparent that this practice is inconsistent with the CRA's principles.  The public coffers should not fund private development and give one developer/investor an unfair advantage over another.

With GOP Senator Scott Brown’s win in Massachusetts as inspiration, Steve Poizner’s campaign has risen from the dead and pulled within 10 points of Meg Whitman in the Republican primary race for governor.

While the numbers come from internal polling, the outfit providing the intel is none other than Senator Scott Brown’s public polling firm. The numbers demonstrate “how fluid the race is,” said Neil Newhouse of Public Opinion Strategies.

The polling concluded on Tuesday and demonstrated that the 800 likely Republican voters were taking a second look at Poizner. Approximately 38 percent said they would vote for Whitman, while 28 percent favored Poizner and 30 percent were undecided. Just over a month ago Whitman led by nearly 50 points.

Newhouse said that outside the San Francisco Bay Area, Whitman’s lead is cut to five points, 35 to 30 percent with a month to go until the primary election. “This race is eerily similar to the Brown, Coakley race,” he said.

“Where we are running our messaging, we have closed from 48 points down to five points. Meg, the marketing expert, needs a refresher course because she probably could have spent less than $70 million to lose 43 points, but at least she provided a bailout for her political consultants who she needs to remind her of her deeply held beliefs,” said Team Poizner Communications Director Jarrod Agen. “We all know Meg went on a climate change cruise with Van Jones and Jimmy Carter, now she’s become the most expensive melting glacier in political history.”

The California Republican governor’s race has now shown signs of life and with 30 days until voters hit the booth, Poizner’s camp says the energy has shifted in their favor.

“Our poll shows that Meg Whitman’s lead over Steve Poizner, which we measured at 59%-11% in February, has closed to 38%-28%, with Whitman holding just a ten-point lead,” Agen explains. “Further, it’s important to note that even though Whitman has spent considerable resources in the area, Steve has not yet aggressively advertised in the San Francisco Bay Area market. “

Poizner’s camp explains that like the Scott Brown race in Massachusetts; ”this race has been largely misunderstood by the media. Campaigns, especially primary campaigns, and especially in large states like California, are seldom won three or four months out from election day.”

With the President discussing the immigration issue at a White House Cinco de Mayo event and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano saying the Democrats are “focused on the border like a laser,” a fair question for Poizner is the immigration issue that has exploded across the nation.

“The federal government has not done enough to end illegal immigration, leaving states like Arizona and California to take fend for themselves,” said Team Poizner’s Agen. “Like Meg Whitman, President Obama has called for an amnesty plan that allows illegal immigrants to pay a fine, go to the back of the line, and become citizens. Steve Poizner strongly opposes amnesty and he is the only candidate in this race that is willing to make ending illegal immigration a top priority.”

Since Arizona passed its tough new illegal immigration law, many California cities have decided to boycott or denounce Arizona. Poizner says he would ‘get tough’ on the issue in California if were governor.
 “Steve supports Arizona’s new law, which takes a bold approach to dealing with illegal immigration while making it crystal clear that racial profiling is both illegal and wrong. Arizona has acted because the federal government has failed to secure our borders,” Agen said. “It is time for California to do the same and, as governor, Steve pledges to make stopping illegal immigration one of his highest priorities. He has detailed a bold plan to address the crisis, which includes cutting off taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal aliens, employing state resources to help secure our borders, ending sanctuary cities, and cracking down on employers who hire illegal aliens”

Poizner points out while Whitman and her liberal allies in Congress want to reward illegal aliens with a 'pathway to citizenship,' he has just two words: ‘No Amnesty.’

Big Changes at the California Republican Assembly - What Does It Mean?

But will the change in leadership at the state level mean changes at the local level? I have not had a very good experience with the CRA, but I still think that there is hope. Most of my bad experience with the CRA is similar to that of other non-profit organizations that have a structure and very little support for membership. Based on comments and email exchanges from blogger Sgt. York (Aaron Park), I think CRA is going to have to endure some significant growing and restructuring pains to overcome the years of hypocritical and completely dead-wrong leadership that I have seen. I hope they get it together quickly and return to their core values to help with the 2012 election.

Decline-To-State Voters: Help or Hindrance

Lately, I have been pondering what all of the Orange County “decline-to-state” or DTS voters might be thinking.  I was a DTS until a few years ago.  At that time I had some of the same ideas I have now, like smaller more efficient government that runs smoothly without squandering our hard-earned tax-dollars.  I also felt, and still do that all children

The Old Guard

I had a meticulously thought out rant about the OCGOP, CRA, and old-school Republicans, a.k.a. “conservatives” but after reading it I decided to cut to the chase. It is time to retire the Old Guard of the Republican Party. They have gone off the reservation and are running amuck with hypocritical values and actions. Between the carpetbagging and the insincere threat against union-backed candidates, I’m done! It’s too depressing. To hell with all of them; may they find bedsores and incontinence at the old folk’s home when we vote them out of office.

Ok, maybe that was a bit too harsh…or maybe not. I hope the next time there is an election you will look very closely at the candidates and vote for someone who has NO endorsements from any of the old regime. Every time we put one of them into office, it comes back to bite us in the ass. Follow the money trail which can sometimes be done via the California Secretary of State’s website or other local and federal agencies.

In a day or two I will be posting a VERY long continuance to my interview with Bill Hunt, 2010 candidate for Orange County Sheriff. Please read every word of it. Not for me but for yourself, your family, Bill Hunt, and everyone else effected by dirty politics. Give your kids and spouse a kiss. Say a prayer. Give your pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. Do these every day and we just might climb out of the hole we have been led to believe is best for us.

Labor Union Sponsors CRP Convention, Will OCGOP Denounce or Boycott?

With the California Republican Party's 2010 Spring Convention in Santa Clara coming up being sponsored in part by The Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriff’s, will OCGOP denounce and boycott the event considering the OCGOP chairman’s anti-union stance?

ALADS leadership in dealing with the County on matters of salary, benefits and any other issues affecting working conditions is truly respected by all unions representing county employees.”

Consider the message we are sending if we attend? Are we going to follow through or quietly ignore the hypocrisy? Imagine the message we could send if we walk the way we talk.

My instincts are telling me OCGOP Chairman Scott Baugh will do nothing even though the whole idea of the OCGOP not backing any canidate who receives support from any union was his idea! 

The California Republican Assembly of Orange County Endorses Carpetbagger

 You read the title correctly.  CRA OC endorses Harry Sidhu, the millionaire carpetbagger from Orange County's 3rd Supervisorial District who is running for the recently vacated 4th Surpervisorial District office.

To put this in context, let us look at what the CRA believes (taken from the CRA website):

"Inalienable Rights: We believe that man's "rights" flow from the Creator and the rights of life, liberty, and justice cannot be legitimately granted or rescinded by men.


Judeo-Christian Foundation: We believe in the guiding force of moral law as expressed by the Judeo- Christian ethic and contained in the Holy Scriptures of these historic faiths.

Self-Government: We believe that the only answer to the current moral decline that our nation now faces is a return to the beliefs and standards of morality which our founding fathers placed into the Constitution. We believe with the framers of that document when President Adams stated, "This Constitution will not work except with a religious people." We understand that the concept of self-government begins with governing one’s self first, then family, community, state, and nation.

Education: We believe in the rights of parents to a quality education for their children. We support parental choice to create competition among the schools. We must insure that no school or teachers union can compromise the education of our children or advance a particular political agenda at the expense of our future generation’s educations.

Taxes: We believe that the federal tax system is abusive to the American people while discouraging investment and growth. We believe in growth-oriented tax policies which would gradually eliminate punitive income taxes and move our tax system in the direction of use taxes and sales taxes only.

Free Enterprise: We believe in the free enterprise system as the best hope for men and women to fulfill their economic hopes and dreams. We know that the free market is the most efficient and the least costly system to deliver the highest quality goods and services at the lowest price to the consumer. We will support only those who support the free enterprise system through legislation to reduce or eliminate intrusive government intervention in the marketplace.

Family: We believe that the traditional American family, defined as any persons related by blood, marriage of a man and a woman and/or adoption, is the cornerstone of our American society, and the government is duty bound to protect the integrity of the family unit through legislation and taxation policies.

Sanctity of Life: We believe that the preborn child is a human being deserving the full protection of the law.

National Defense: We believe in a strong and consistent national defense. We believe in victory over, and not accommodation with, tyranny in any form or philosophy.

Right to Bear Arms: We believe in the unqualified right of our citizens to keep and bear arms without the intrusive hand of government.

Victims’ Rights: We believe in the concept of victims’ rights over the rights of any criminal. We support a system of restitution as a deterrent to crime and recidivism.

Term Limitation: We believe that public service is a privilege. We support term limits for public officials, not as an ideal but as a necessity to dissuade career politicians. It is the people who should rule, not an elite with little accountability.

National Sovereignty: We believe in an America first program in which Government’s first concern is the welfare and protection of the American people. We do not believe in trade protectionism but support political leaders who will adopt policies that create fair and competitive trade."

If you read those tenets of conservatism and believed that the CRA leadership in Orange County might actually practice what they preach, you would be mistaken. First, Harish Singh (a.k.a."Harry") Sidhu has ran for several offices in just the last couple of years. In 2004 he was elected to Anaheim City Council. In 2008 he ran and was reelected to the council. That same year, 2008, he ran an unsuccessful campaign for the California State Senate. Once again he's looking for a higher office (than the Anaheim City Council) to park his ambitions until something more lucrative opens up. Clearly his political ambitions are more important than actually serving the community.


Harish Sidhu is a Sikh. So how does his religion fit in with the first and second tenets above? I think these might be important and the local CRA members may want to re-consider their endorsement. Alright, so maybe these religious tenets aren't very important to many members. Then, why are they there as the first and second beliefs of CRA?

Does Harish Signh Sidhu really believe that that the traditional American family, defined as any persons related by blood, marriage of a man and a woman and/or adoption, is the cornerstone of our American society, and the government is duty bound to protect the integrity of the family unit through legislation and taxation policies? If so, why did the CRA send these out to voters in 2008?

I am concerned that the members of the California Republican Assembly (which I am a member of) did not vet this candidate at all.  I think a few key people through it out there and that was that.  Certainly, the leadership of the CRA wouldn't openly and overtly condone Harish Singh Sidhu's carpetbagging luggage...would they?
