CTA: The Puppet Master

Where do they find these guys?

CTA is throwing all of their support behind a few guys who are sure to keep lining the pockets of a few CTA members.  Jerry Brown, Gavin Newsom, and Tom Torlakson are all getting significant help from the public employee union.  Besides being union puppets, all of them have misguided policies that take from many and benefit few.

As Newsom has said, "whether [I] like it or not" I am a member of CTA.  Every chance I get to call out the union for what it is, I do.  They have done me no favors and continue to take my dues despite me crying foul and trying to get the automatic deductions stopped.

U.S. unions have out lived their usefulness.  It used to be that they protected workers from dangerous and unfair business practice.  Their only purpose for existence now is to abuse tax payers.  Seriously, what harmful environment do teachers encounter in their classroom that they need a union to save them from?  Maybe students need a union to protect them from the CTA, "evil" district management, and political union puppets.

Given the chance, what will Brown, Newsom, and Torlakson do for our children?

During Jerry Brown's last tenure as governor, he ran TWICE for president.  Instead of running the state he travelled the country to attend rallies.  Brown has a history of office shopping, much like Anaheim's own Harish "Harry" Sidhu.

Gavin Newsom is a pompous ass simply for his egregious self-serving statements; not so much his message which is clouded by poor judgment but rather his delivery.  He has done more as mayor of San Francisco to hurt California than he ever did to help his own city.  Between the Prop 8 rhetoric, which I think was a big reason it won, and the sanctuary city policy, Newsom is a public nuisance.

Let's take a peek at Torlakson, the termed-out 11th Assembly District Democratic member.  All of his support is from either public employee unions or other political hacks.  On his website he says, "As State Superintendent of Public Instruction, I will be the leading advocate for restoring and increasing the state's investment in our schools."  I take "increasing the state's investment" to mean he wants to throw good money after bad in a state that is ranked number one for per student expenditure. The 2010-2011 budget from the Governor's Office shows a total $118,755,483 for K-12 education.  With more than 6,200,000 students enrolled in 2008, we must have spent $19,154.11 on each student per school year.  My son's superior private education costs me about $4,000 per year.  So where does the other $15,154 go?  The numbers vary depending on what fact sheet you use but even the worst estimate places the per-student spending at about $7,500 per year.  That's still nearly double what I pay for my son's education.  So I ask again, where did the balance of the money go?
The answer is simple: the tax money is burned up on the front end with special programs and bloated administrative budgets.  There are dozens, maybe hundreds, of commissions and boards that receive funding through California Department of Education with members collecting stipends and travel expense reimbursement.  Our own Fullerton High School Principals are paid more than $200,000 per year with their multiple assistants being paid well over $100,000.  And I haven't even mentioned all of the those paid symposiums and seminars in Monterey and Palm Springs.  It is mind boggling how much waste (and personal profit) there is in education.

In my opinion the education crisis cannot be solved by outsiders trying to "fix" it.  I think the change must come from within and be genuine.  To that end I believe school vouchers will force those within the broken system to address the problems for fear of a perpetual loss of funding and jobs.  It comes down to supply and demand driven by a boycott-like principle.  Unfortunately, we have few in Sacramento willing to sign their name to a voucher bill which means vouchers would have to be a ballot box initiative.  With CTA's funding, that would be a huge up-hill battle, but one that I would gladly support.

Torlakson will continue the tax abuse of the current superintendent and the rest of Sacramento. In 2009 Torlakson voted for EVERY SINGLE BILL that was offered up!  He voted YES on everything!!!  Do we really want someone who will spend our taxes freely in the name of our children?  NO!

Bill Hunt Visits Orange May 25, 2010

I met Michael Green just yesterday at my "other" office.  After talking with him for a few minutes Hunt's name came up and he produced this flyer.  If you haven't had a chance to meet Bill, this is a great opportunity.  The 80-guest limit means you will have time to get to know Bill and hear first hand his solutions for Orange County.  Ride with Bill on the trolley as he tours Orange with the locals.

Opus is a cigar-friendly restaurant with great food.  I hope you will find the time and money to attend this great event to support Bill Hunt for Sheriff!

ACEC CA Sponsored Legislation Related to the Crawford Supreme Court "Duty To Defend" Decision - SB 972

****UPDATE****
I met with Ca. Assemblyman Chris Norby's staff at his district office last Friday, June 11, 2010.  His staff indicated that SB 972 looked like it would be on the Governor's desk very soon.  They didn't see any reason why it would be stalled any further.
****UPDATE****

This showed up in my email this morning.  After reading the background on this, I see the need to get this passed as quickly as possible.  Read it and pass it along where you can.

TAKE ACTION - SUPPORT ACEC LEGISLATION - DUTY TO DEFEND OBLIGATIONS FOR DESIGN PROFESSIONALS Take Action!
ACEC CA Sponsored Legislation Related to the Crawford Supreme Court "Duty To Defend" Decision

ACEC sponsored SB 972 responds to the Supreme Court's ruling in Crawford and an Appeals Court's ruling in UDC. These terrible rulings can force design professionals to pay an indemnitee's attorney fees even when a firm was neither negligent nor in breach of contract. Moreover, in the UDC case the court ruled that the engineering firm had a duty to defend the indemnitee, even though the plaintiff did not even allege that the engineering firm was negligent.

It is literally impossible for a design professional firms to obtain insurance to cover other's attorney fees in these circumstances. These cases force companies to literally "bet the firm" every time a contract signed. That is terrible for business and job growth and frankly is just not right.

SB 972 is important and urgently needed. Already in response to these court rulings, design professional firms are increasingly confronted with onerous and uninsurable indemnity demands in contracts and tenders for the defense of lawsuits not involving allegations of professional negligence. Relief, as envisioned by SB 972, is critical.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION TODAY!! SEND THIS EMAIL TO OTHERS SO THEY CAN TAKE ACTION TOO!!

Thanks,

George Will: A law Arizona can live with

"WASHINGTON "Misguided and irresponsible" is how Arizona's new law pertaining to illegal immigration is characterized by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She represents San Francisco, which calls itself a "sanctuary city," an exercise in exhibitionism that means it will be essentially uncooperative regarding enforcement of immigration laws. Yet as many states go to court to challenge the constitutionality of the federal mandate to buy health insurance, scandalized liberals invoke 19th-century specters of "nullification" and "interposition," anarchy and disunion. Strange. Read more.

I can't say I ever agreed with George Will before reading this, probably because I never paid much attention to him.  However, after reading his articulate view of the situation, I will read his future editorials.

The United States Code, Public Employees' Oath of Office, and Pensions

TITLE 5, PART III, Subpart B, CHAPTER 33, SUBCHAPTER II, § 3331

§ 3331. Oath of office
An individual, except the President, elected or appointed to an office of honor or profit in the civil service or uniformed services, shall take the following oath: “I, AB, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.” This section does not affect other oaths required by law.

Do public employee union members violate this oath when they cash in their pensions knowing full well the impact that their unfunded pensions are having on the governmental agency which they were employed with?

The Peasants' Revolt, May-June 1381

by Sir John Froissart (borrowed from "The Mammoth Book of Eye Witness Britain" edited by Jon E. Lewis)

(Background: Caused largely by the Poll Tax of 1379 and the Statute of Labourers of 1381. The latte fixed maximum wages in the wake of the Black Death.)

(after subduing the revolt) "This whole day the King passed with his mother, and a proclamation was made through all the streets, that every person who was not an inhabitant of London, and who had not resided there for a whole year, should instantly depart; for if any of a contrary description were found in the city on Sunday morning a sunrise, they would be arrested as traitors to the King, and have their heads cut off. This proclamation no one dared to infringe, but all instantly departed to their homes quite discomfited.

"John Ball and Jack Straw were found hidden in an old ruin, where they had secreted themselves, thinking to steal away when things were quiet; but this they were prevented from doing, for their own men betrayed them. With this capture the King and his barons were much pleased, and had their heads cut off, as was that of Tyler's, and fixed on London Bridge, in the room of those whom these wretches themselves had placed there.

"News of this total defeat of the rebels in London was sent throughout the neighbouring counties, in order that all those who were on their way to London might hear of it; and as soon s they did so, they instantly returned to their homes, without daring to advance farther."

King Richard II, 1367-1400 A.D.

CBSNews.com: Arizona Immigration Law Fight Far From Over

"Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a divisive measure intended to curb illegal immigration, but the fight over the legislation is far from over."

The only reason SOME feel it is "divisive" is because the law expressly demonstrates the will of the majority of Arizona voters which leaves illegal immigrants running. There is a huge market for those who pander to the illegal immigrants. Some sell food and goods. Others sell newspapers and advertisements. Some offer various services like immigration assistance. The problem is that they are all aiding and abetting the continued illegal occupation of the U.S. for their own personal and financial gain. So, go ahead and boycott Arizona. Don't visit the Grand Canyon or Lake Havasu. With trespassers deported and their sympathetic supporters pouting, we can all enjoy the southwest in peace. Arizona citizens will finally be free from harassment at The Home Depot and able to get a construction job or two.

Maybe it's time for me to raise the Arizona State Flag over my house...

OC Register: Racism, Illegal Immigration, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and Bill Hunt

The OC Register just can’t get enough of Bill Hunt. From the looks of the headlines, Hunt just might be the best thing that’s happened to the failing media company in a long time. It seems that protestors and allegations of racism no matter how patently false are great gimmicks to sell papers. Indeed, they are right up there with sex.

First, we have the OC Register story bearing the headline “Protesters rally outside O.C. Sheriff candidate’s event” http://www.ocregister.com/news/hunt-245737-arpaio-sheriff.html

The story takes you down the path of the newly minted immigration law in Arizona and then to Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. OCR: "He helped pass this ridiculous, awful, mean-spirited bill," Maureen Shrubsole said of Arpaio. "Everybody in this country is from somewhere else originally."

It seems Shrubsole forgot that citizens pledge their allegiance to the United States Constitution. So whether you are a new citizen or your family has been here for 350 years, we all must do the right thing and uphold all of our laws including those of immigration. It is our civic duty.

The OC Register makes the protestors outside of the event the headline story rather than the reason for the fuss. No, Arpaio isn’t the reason for the angst, although the protestors and news paper will have you think he is. The real story being missed is that of U.S. citizens who are burdened by immigrants who have trespassed into the U.S.A. Those who bring their poverty north of the border hoping to strike it rich and return south someday with their pockets lined in greenbacks are displacing legitimate workers, suppressing wages, and collapsing our hospitals. This is the story the OC Register misses time and again.

But that’s not all we got from the OC Register this weekend…

Our next OCR headline is “Arpaio takes immigration victory slow”. http://www.ocregister.com/news/arpaio-245704-sheriff-hunt.html?cb=1272292126

What kind of headline is that? The author assumes that Arpaio doesn’t (or didn’t) have the appropriate authority to tackle some of the immigration issues. That isn’t true.
“Under the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution, federal law is the supreme law of the land. State and local governments are “preempted” from enacting legislation in areas where Congress has asserted its exclusive authority or that would conflict with federal legislation. In the immigra¬tion field, the U.S. Supreme Court has recognized three tests to determine whether federal law preempts a state or local law: 1) constitutional preemption, 2) field preemption, and 3) conflict preemption. A state or local law related to immigration that fails any one of these three tests is preempted by federal law and therefore unconstitutional and invalid.” http://www.ncacc.org/annualconf/2008-b1_lawbulletin.pdf
Therefore, Arpaio can enforce many of the federal immigration regulations as well as Maricopa County Ordinances and his own policies. Most importantly, he can screen for immigration status when the prisoners are incarcerated for other crimes.

My favorite quote from these stories is from Arpaio:
"Ten guys in a trunk. I would think that's reasonable suspicion," Arpaio said. He proudly announced that his department just arrested 22 illegal immigrants at a fast-food restaurant. "I just opened 22 jobs for people here legally."

Common sense.  And that is why Sheriff Joe Arpaio is liked by many and hated by liberal lefties.

What do internet taxes and joint checking accounts have in common?

Oh Meg, oh Meg, where art thou thousands? To where have you placed them now?
Not at the polls for it is clear, technology taxes your greatest fear.

Oh Steve, oh Steve, where art thou thousands? To where have you placed them now?

My Grandma - A Eulogy

LET'S TALK ABOUT 1914 FOR A MOMENT.

FOR STARTERS, GRANDMA WAS BORN TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1914 IN HER FAMILY'S ATWOOD RANCH HOUSE.

IT IS WORTH NOTING THOSE ALSO BORN IN 1914:

JACK LALANNE

JOE DIMAGGIO

DANNY THOMAS

AND WHO DIED IN 1914:

JOHN MUIR, THE FAMOUS NATURALIST FOR WHICH NUMEROUS ROADS, PARKS, HOTELS, AND NATURE RESERVES ARE NAMED.

IT IS ALSO WORTH NOTING THAT IN 1914 WOODROW WILSON SIGNS MOTHER'S DAY PROCLAMATION AND BABE RUTH MAKES HIS MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT WITH THE RED SOX. MOTHER'S DAY AND BASEBALL- TWO OF MY FAVORITES!! (PERHAPS HER NICKNAME "BABE" CAME FROM BABE RUTH???)

GRANDMA WAS BORN INTO A PERIOD OF TIME FILLED WITH TURMOIL. IN JUNE OF 1914 ARCHDUKE FRANZS FERDINAND WAS ASSASSINATED. WITHIN ONE MONTH WORLD WAR I RAGED ACROSS EUROPE. TWO DAYS AFTER HER BIRTH HOWEVER, GERMAN AND BRITISH TROOPS INTERRUPTED WWI TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS. (PERHAPS THEY PAUSE KNOWING THAT A GREAT WOMAN WAS BORNE) WORLD WAR I CONTINUED UNTIL THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES IN 1919.

ALTHOUGH SHE WAS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD, SHE SAW THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS CREATED AND THE 19TH AMENDMENT WAS APPROVED BY THE U.S. CONGRESS GUARANTEEING THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN TO VOTE.

SHE LIVED THROUGH MANY NOTABLE EVENTS. LIKE THE 1933 LONG BEACH EARTHQUAKE OR WHEN ATWOOD FLOODED ALONG WITH MOST OF ORANGE COUNTY IN 1938 AND THE FLOOD-WATERS CLAIMED MORE THAN 50 PEOPLE, 43 OF WHICH WERE FROM ATWOOD! ALL OF THIS DURING A TIME THAT WE READ ABOUT IN SCHOOL AND KNOWN AS "THE GREAT DEPRESSION". SOMEWHERE IN ALL OF THAT SHE FOUND THE LOVE OF HER LIFE, GRANDPA LEO, GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL, GOT MARRIED, AND HAD KIDS!

THEN THERE WAS WORLD WAR II. FROM PEARL HARBOR TO HIROSHIMA, GRANDMA WAS RAISING MY UNCLE BOB AND MOM ARLINE. WITH AIR-RAID SIRENS AND BLACKOUTS SHE WAS A WIFE AND MOTHER. WHAT A TIME TO RAISE CHILDREN! I BET GRANDMA'S PARENTS WERE ABEL TO TELL HER A THING OR TWO ABOUT RAISING KIDS IN WARTIME.

GRANDMA WAS THERE WHEN THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA HELD THEIR 3RD ANNUAL NATIONAL JAMBOREE IN 1953. SHE SAW AIRBASES OPEN IN '42 AND CLOSE IN '99. SHE WATCHED WALTER KNOTT START UP HIS BERRY FARM AND WALT DISNEY TURN ORANGE GROVES AND STRAWBERRY PATCHES INTO DISNEYLAND!

SHE SAW THE HORSE AND CARRIAGE FADE AWAY INTO HISTORY AND SPACE TRAVEL EXPLODE BEFORE HER WITH THE FIRST LUNAR LANDING. JUST IMAGINE HOW MUCH TECHNOLOGY HAS CHANGED OVER THE LAST 100 YEARS. FROM TUBE RECTIFIERS TO SUPERCONDUCTORS; FROM TRANS-ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH CABLES TO SATELLITE TV.

SHE SAW MORE IN HER 93 YEARS THAN MOST OF US WILL EVER READ ABOUT, LET ALONE LIVE THROUGH!

OF THOSE 93 YEARS IT IS MY HONOR TO HAVE BEEN HER GRANDSON FOR 35 OF THEM. SHE WAS MY MOTHER WHEN MOM HAD TO WORK. SHE WIPED MY NOSE AND PUT FOOD IN MY MOUTH. SHE LET ME PLAY WITH GRANDPA EVEN THOUGH SHE NEEDED HIM TO TAKE HER TO THE STORE. SHE WAS MY GRANDMA AND I WILL MISS HER IMMENSELY.

JUST LOOK AROUND THIS ROOM; SHE DID THIS. SHE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING SO MANY GOOD PEOPLE INTO THIS WORLD AND TOGETHER TODAY. THIS IS HER LEGACY.

A Dedication To My Loving Wife, Stacey. Thank you for all you do for me!

Brad Paisley - I Thought I Loved You Then

I remember trying not to stare the night that I first met you
You had me mesmerized
3 weeks later in the front porch light taking 45 min to kiss you goodnight
I hadn’t told you yet but I thought I loved you then

Chorus
Now you’re my whole life now you’re my whole world
I just can’t believe the way I feel about you girl
Like a river meets the sea
Stronger than it’s ever been
We’ve come so far since that day
And I thought I loved you then.

I remember taking you back to right where I first met you
You were so surprised
There were people around
But I didn’t care I got down on one knee right there
And once again I thought I loved you then

Chorus
Now you’re my whole life now you’re my whole world
I just can’t believe the way I feel about you girl
Like a river meets the sea
Stronger than it’s ever been
We’ve come so far since that day
And I thought I loved you then.

I can just see you with a baby on the way
I can just see you when your hair is turning gray
What I can’t see is how I’m ever gonna love you more
But I’ve said that before.

Now you’re my whole life now you’re my whole world
I just can’t believe the way I feel about you girl
Well look back some day at this moment that we’re in
And I'll look at you and say I thought I loved you then
And I thought I loved you then...
