The Changing Arctic, 1922

  1. Didn't this take place about 100 years after the start of the great U.S. industrial revolution? Maybe 100 years of coal and steel production along with coal and wood burning heat for virtually everyone except those that lived near hot springs had something to do with the changing climate at the time. The use of oil and natural gas actually made things cleaner for a while until the population off set those gains. Today China is still using deadly amounts of coal to produce cheap products for the rest of the world that has reduced their import tariffs.

Soot from all the coal would end up on snow and ice and absorb the heat of the sun and melt ice.
The switch to natural gas and oil would have allowed for a short cooling trend that would have accounted for the glaciers, snow in the Swiss Alps and Southern California mountains that was prevalent when I was young in the 1960's and 1970's.

This is just off the cuff and you can check the weather models to see if my memory is correct. Not that I was around during the Industrial Revolution. I just remember James Bond movies with lots of snow and no contrails in the blue skies, local mountains with lots of snow and rain for weeks at a time in Southern California.
Trends and cycles, maybe. The melting of fresh water into salt water and those effects on ocean currents are also a possibility. Consider the fact that Greenland is named because when it was discovered, it was not white and frozen but in fact green. We went into a little ice age after that and have been getting warmer for the most part since then.

It is good to look at history to asses the future. Without historic reference, we are just taking shots in the dark.

  2. Very true about history.

Let's also not forget that L.A. had some of its worst smog during in the 1950's. (http://www.radford.edu/~wkovarik/envhist/7forties.html)

A week or so ago I was watching a 1960's (1968?) western and there were numerous contrails/chemtrails in several scenes. I'll try to dig up the title...
